Our Story

The Church of The Holy Spirit had its beginnings in late 1985, meeting as a bible study in Roanoke County, Virginia. Originally a congregation of The Episcopal Church in the USA, the members held their first Sunday worship in 1986, and called their first rector, Quigg Lawrence, in January of 1989. In the Winter of 2000, Church of the Holy Spirit was the first local church congregation to join the newly formed Anglican Mission in America (AMiA), an missionary outreach of the Episcopal Church of Rwanda, following the Singapore Consecrations.

In 2002, Church of the Holy Spirit "Orchard Hills" was created as an intentional church plant ("seed church") in Botetourt County, Virginia. In its first year in existence, Orchard Hills grew to more than 220 members.

In February of 2005, a second seed church, Church of the Holy Spirit "The River", was created for the Blacksburg / Christiansburg area. That's us! Our mission was and is to introduce Jesus Christ to citizens of the New River Valley in a fresh way, in a relaxed atmosphere, and always according to the Word of God. We first met for several months as a weeknight care group, but in the Summer of 2005 were blessed to be able to begin holding weekly Sunday Celebrations at Kipps Elementary School in Blacksburg. By the end of the following summer, worshippers numbered around 50 each week. In the Fall of 2006, the church was admitted as a parish of the AMiA (now "Anglican Mission in the Americas"), and accepted her first members. Come and visit!
